Community Visitor's Scheme

Community Visitors Scheme (or CVS) across Australia recognise that most people want 'someone special' in their lives, and older people are no less interested in this idea than you, your family members, friends or workmates.

The CVS matches volunteers on a 'one on one' basis with a person living in an aged care facility (also known as nursing homes or hostels). The volunteer then visits regularly. Through the relationship, which develops, the loneliness isolation is reduced in the older persons life.

The Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing funds the CVS. There are approximately 170 organisations that auspice the CVS and in excess of 5,500 volunteer visitors across Australia

Who Are Community Visitors?

Community Visitors come from all walks of life. They're of all ages and genders.

Community Visitors are people who have a liking for the older members of our community and an interest in what can be shared together. They have a little spare time and are prepared to make a regular, ongoing commitment.

Who Do Community Visitors Visit?

Each volunteer visits someone living in a local aged care facility whose quality of life would be improved by friendship and companionship.

Some of the people needing a visitor may be frail, have a hearing or vision impairment, or have a significant loss of mobility and perhaps require a wheelchair. Others may have a loss of skills through, for example, dementia or having a stroke; although most residents are over 60, a small percentage are under 60.

Some residents of Aged Care Facilities have no visitors. Others have occasional visitors but feel lonely and need more involvement. Occasionally residents do not have positive relationships with their family and need someone who can see them through a different light. There are people from all walks of life & backgrounds with different values and interests. They are introverted, extroverted, open, serious, self-absorbed, tired of life, humorous; the list is endless. Really, no different from us!
